Inspiration 3.19

Monday, March 19, 2012

Presently obsessing over the moody Jacques Garcia redesign of the turn-of-the-century NoMad hotel in Manhattan. So inspiring for a studio apartment (alas, a tub in your living room can't work for everyone).

The Lorien Hotel and Spa in Old Town

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

I'm strangely excited about the Lorien Hotel and Spa in Old Town Alexandria, in spite of the fact I'll probably never have a decent excuse to check in. The guestrooms were designed by the wonderful Vicente Wolf, and many of the rooms also feature his photographs.

The Lorien is a Kimpton hotel, which I think is one of the best "chains" out there. As much as I would love to pretend I'm totally down with sweet, little mom-and pop-owned bed and breakfasts, I feel better knowing there's a big machine behind my quiet guestroom, making sure my every need is attended to.

I have to say, part of the allure of this hotel is the beautiful styling in these photos --which I'm sure bears no resemblance to the actual rooms. First of all, breakfast in bed? I'm already sold on the room. Then they top it off with these thoughtful bedside tableaus. The left side looks ready to tuck you in at night with a journal, candle and glass of wine (?). Meanwhile, the table on the right, with the tea and white flower arrangement has "woke up on the right side of the bed" written all over it. At first glance the bathroom, looked pretty standard to me -- nice, clean but not anything particularly eye-catching, however the claw-foot tub totally redeemed it. I would love to give a stay here as a Mother's Day present for my mom on her next trip here...Unfortunately, its out of my paygrade with rates starting at $209.(Sorry, Mom!)
